As autonomous driving becomes commonplace, the issue of whose insurance would be responsible for potential accidents continues to be debated.
In the meantime, Liberty Mutual Insurance and Subaru are teaming up on an app to monitor drivers' habits, provide reports and offer tips to be a better driver to lower premiums, while you're still behind the wheel.
"We are excited to bring this innovative offering to market," said Hamid Mirza, auto product manager, Liberty Mutual Insurance, in a statement. "This partnership combines Liberty Mutual's extensive experience and reach in usage-based insurance with Subaru and Clarion's cutting-edge connected car technology to bring RightTrack savings to consumers in new ways."
The new app, which is available on the SUBARU STARLINK infotainment platform, will be available on all Subaru models next year that come with STARLINK.
For example, after each trip, a driver will get a report showing whether they braked too hard or accelerated too much. If driving performance increases over time, drivers can expect to see savings through Liberty Mutual's RightTrack, which is a usage-based insurance program that lets customers save based on driving habits.
The app will also get updated in the future, including items such as severe weather alerts, accident scene assistance and roadside assistance.
